How to properly apply gel nail polish. What you need for gel polish manicure at home. What is the difference between gel polish and regular polish
Nowadays, it is not difficult to make a stylish manicure at home. The stores offer a wide range of special devices for manicure: varnishes, gel coatings, stencils, etc. Until recently, home manicures were notable for their fragility, the reason for this was the weak durability of the varnish. But now everything has changed, it has become public gel polish or shellac. The main feature of this material is that it stays on the nails for more than two weeks.
What is gel polish in manicure
The procedure for performing a manicure using gel polish is offered in almost every beauty salon. There are also a huge number of manicure specialists working at home. Recently, many girls have begun to buy all the necessary equipment for performing a manicure using a gel coating and, accordingly, do it at home. But nevertheless, when everything necessary materials acquired, the question arises: "How to do a manicure?". We will answer this question by talking in detail about the technology correct application gel polish at home. Before you start creating a manicure, you need to understand what gel polish (shellac) is. The gel polish itself is a porous polymer that allows air to pass through. It has a number of advantages:
- Lasts up to 4 weeks, which saves time on manicure, because even the most good polish does not last more than 5 days.
- It does not require any special skills, it is applied quite simply.
- Variety of color options. Every girl can choose a gel according to her mood.
- Gel polish perfectly levels the surface of the nail plate.
- Does not spoil the structure of the nail itself.
However, such a manicure also has its drawbacks, which in general do not spoil the overall picture of its merits. For example:
- The high cost of the procedure, especially if you do a manicure in the salon with a good master. Do-it-yourself gel polish at home also requires the cost of tools and materials (UV lamp, special acetone-containing liquids, etc.)
- Wearing a manicure using shellac for a long time is harmful. Therefore, after 4-5 times of application, the nails must be given time to rest and recover.
- Difficulty in removing gel polish. This will not work with regular nail polish remover. It is necessary to use only acetone-containing liquids and spend a sufficient amount of time on the procedure for removing the gel.
What is needed to create a manicure
To make a durable, high-quality shellac manicure, you need to have a certain set of tools and materials. Before coating nails with shellac, they must be well processed, for this you will need the following tools:
- . They are used to process the free edge of the nails and give them the necessary shape.
- . Needed to get rid of overgrown skin at the base of the nails.
- . It is used for polishing the surface of the nail plate, as well as for removing the keratin layer.
- . Used to align the free edge of the nail plate.
- . Used to remove excess cuticles.
- . With their help, you can easily lift and push back the cuticle.
After treating the nails with the above set of tools, you will need the following materials directly to perform a manicure: bonds, (acidic, acid-free), dehydrators. All these funds are necessary in order to degrease and rid the nail plate of excess moisture. In addition, these products provide better adhesion to the gel-coated nail.
- . It is used to disinfect nails and prevent the appearance of various fungal diseases.
- . Designed to level the surface of the nail plate, protects against the penetration of gel polish into the nail structure, provides good adhesion to artificial materials.
- . It is used directly to create a colored manicure.
- . The top coat, used to fix the color coating, ensures the durability of the manicure, warning it from damage and chips.
And the main important tool, without which it is impossible to create a high-quality manicure using shellac, is. It is used for polymerization (drying) of the gel coating. The quality and power of such a lamp will determine how well the gel polish dries and, accordingly, the durability of your manicure. For home use, a 36 watt lamp is perfect.

How to do a manicure with gel polish
The technology for performing work includes several points:
- First you need, to soften it, you can first use warm baths. Then you need to give the nails desired shape, the one that the girl considers the most harmonious.
Stage 1 - Soften the cuticle
- Then take the buff and sand the nail plate, carefully working near the base of the nail and at the edge. Remove excess particles under the nails. This procedure will subsequently help the gel polish to better “adhere” to the nail.
Stage 2 - Grinding the plate
Important! We do not process natural nail saw, even finely abrasive.
- Wipe the surface of the nail plate with a cotton pad previously moistened with a degreaser.
Stage 3 - Degrease the surface of the nail
- Application of the base (gel polish base). It is important not to overdo it with the amount, that is, you need to cover the nail plate with a thin layer, paying special attention to the edges of the nail, which will ensure a longer manicure in a presentable form. Then place the nails under a UV or Led lamp for 30-60 seconds.
Step 4 - Apply the base coat on the nail
Important! Overdoing the nail, you can achieve the creation of a fragile coating, which will collapse after 2 days.
- Application of gel polish desired color. The coating layer should be thin. If the gel gets on the cuticle, then you need to use an orange stick to remove it. By carefully distributing the material over the nail, the girl can send it under the lamp for 1-2 minutes.
Step 5 - Apply the first thin layer of gel polish
It is important to know how to properly apply gel polish. Apply as shown in the picture. In the center, at the base of the nail, put a point of varnish, then with a sharp but gentle movement, stretch it to the free edge of the nail plate, then brush along the sides of the nail in the same direction (top to bottom). Next, carefully pass the brush along the free edge, sealing it (this will prolong the wear of the manicure). So, the nail is completely painted over.
- Applying another layer of gel polish, but a little thicker. This will give the manicure more saturation, make the color deeper. Then, similarly to the first layer, it must be polymerized under an ultraviolet lamp.
Step 6 - Apply the second coat of gel polish
- The use of a top involves applying the product over the gel. We place the nails in the lamp for 40-60 seconds. Its main purpose is to create a protective layer, to prevent the appearance of chips, in addition, the top makes the manicure glossy, neat, more beautiful.
Step 7 - Apply the top coat
- Repeating the earlier action already done: treating the nail with a degreasing liquid. It is performed in order to remove the sticky layer.
Step 8 - Remove the sticky layer with a cotton pad
- At the end of the procedure, it is desirable to soften the skin at the base of the nail, using cuticle oil.
Possible errors when applying gel polish
Gel polish nails are famous for their strength and durability, in theory this is true if you know all the intricacies of applying gel polish. However, in practice, due to lack of knowledge in this area, girls, doing manicure at home, make a number of mistakes, which can subsequently shorten the period of wearing a manicure, lead to cracks and chips in the coating. To avoid these unpleasant consequences, we will talk about the mistakes that should not be made when applying shellac:
- Before processing the cuticle, some masters soak their nails with a bath, and so, it is important not to overdo it here, otherwise it can lead to excessive moisture of the nail plate, and you will have to resort to the help of a dehydrator.
- If the cuticle is poorly processed and the nail is not cleaned well enough from pterygium, then air can get under the gel polish, which will further lead to peeling of the artificial coating.
- If the nail plate is not sanded well enough before starting to apply shellac, especially in the area of the cuticle and free edge, this can also lead to premature peeling of the varnish.
- Insufficient degreasing of the nail plate with the help of special tools also reduces the period of wearing a manicure.
- Disregard for the processing of the end and sides of the nail with special tools (primer, ultrabond), which ensure good adhesion of the gel coating to the nail plate.
- Applying too thick a layer of gel polish. Each layer should be thin to avoid insufficient drying.
- It is also important to seal the cut (end) of the nail with each subsequent layer. So the manicure will last longer.
- If your nails are thin and often break, then it is better not to neglect the use of a strengthening gel and leveling the nail plate with a base. It is better to use a soluble gel so that when removing a manicure, avoid cutting off.
- It is very important to take seriously the choice of products such as base and top, because they are responsible for the quality of your manicure and ensure its durability. In no case should you save on these materials.
- The use of single-phase coatings is also undesirable. Use three-phase gel polishes, then it will be much easier to avoid premature peeling and chipping.
- Avoid using gel polishes that can only be removed by filing. This procedure can often threaten damage to the nail plate. Use coatings that require soaking.
If you follow these simple rules for applying shellac, you will be able to please yourself and those around you with your beautiful nails much longer.
Is it possible to remove gel nail polish at home
Nails covered with gel polish do not require specific care, the rules for its maintenance. However, getting rid of an “overgrown” manicure is more difficult than getting rid of a regular varnish. In a specialized cosmetic store, you need to purchase a gel polish remover (Shellac).
Removing gel polish from nails at home
So, they need to moisten the cut cotton pads (Fig. 2), attach them to the nail platinum and wrap each nail with foil so that the product does not evaporate (Fig. 3). After waiting about 20 minutes, remove the foil and cotton pads, the gel will come off with them (Fig. 4), its remains can be removed with an orange stick and sawing off with a grinding file (Fig. 5).
You can read more about removing gel polish, including with a machine, in the article:
Using gel polish in manicure is the most reasonable solution. In order for it to please you for a long time, it is necessary to use rubber gloves for prolonged contact with water and household chemicals.
Video: Technique for applying gel polish at home
I want to tell you about how I assembled my gel polish kit at home, what I bought and how much it costs.
I want to note right away that I use a three-phase system, because I consider it a mandatory step to apply a base coat that protects the nail plate from aggressive and not always safe colored gel polish. So let's go! We will need:
1. Base. As I mentioned above, the base coat protects the nails. This is very important, because health must be protected! Hence the conclusion - you should not save on the base, it is best to use a high-quality base, usually of American origin. I have base Harmony Gelish, the cost is 1490 rubles.
2. top. On the top coat, I also do not advise saving, because the durability of manicure and appearance. I use Top Harmony Gelish giving an amazing gloss! Price 1190 rubles.
3. Color gel polish. There is a huge range of options and prices! You only need 1-2 polishes to get started. Do not take the cheapest and Chinese ones at the initial stage, so as not to be disappointed in the gel polish manicure. For the first attempts, the average price category is suitable, and only then, when you understand what you are doing, you can try both cheap and expensive options in search of your ideal coverage. There are many different companies in my arsenal, there is also China, prices are from 100 to 800 rubles per bottle, each varnish is good in its own way, you can read reviews about them at the links:
- Harmony Gelish, USA, 800r;
- Crislish Cristina, China, 200r;
- JT Nail, China, 77r;
- Elite99, China, 65 rubles;
- GelColor Lidan, 380r;
- Sagitta Fiesta, 280r;
- MILD East, China, 100 rubles;
- MSK, China, 150r;
4. Acid free primer. Many people skip this step because they naturally have nails that hold up well without any primers. But I was not lucky enough to have perfect nails, so without this component, my manicure lasts a week at most. I use acid-free primer Harmony Gelish, price 380 rub.
5. Buff (grinder). Serves to remove gloss from the nail and gives it a roughness for better adhesion to the coating. The price is about 50 rubles.
6. Dehydrator (degreaser). To keep the coating well, you need to degrease the nail plate before applying the base layer. Cost varies by company and size. In my case, about 400 rubles for the "Nail pure" dehydrator. Can be replaced with nail polish remover (abbreviated as ZhDSL).
7. Klinser (liquid for removing the sticky layer). It also costs differently (company, volume), I got 120 rubles for a 60ml bottle of Gel it. You can replace ZhDSL without acetone, but practice shows that the gloss is not so clean in the end, it’s better to use a clinser specially designed for this, all the more it’s not expensive.
8. Remover (gel polish remover). And here ZhDSL can come to the rescue, but again, the removal will be longer and is it worth it to dry the fingers and nails with acetone? The special remover is definitely more gentle on the hands and soaks the gel polish more effectively, and faster! My remover Harmony Gelish, costs 628 rubles. There are cheaper than other companies, at the time of purchase Gelish was the only one available.
9. UV or LED lamp. Without it, gel polish cannot be on hand, each layer must be dried. The lamps cost differently, there are mini options that are cheaper, but take longer to dry. I recommend taking a 36W lamp (from 1000 rubles). I have a combined LED + CCFL lamp for 2240 rubles from China.
10. Manicure accessories: files, nippers, scissors, brushes, foil, lint-free wipes, cuticle oil, etc.
My starter kit of the above and 2 colored gel polishes (200 rubles each) cost 6900 rubles. This is a decent amount, but the materials pay off in 2-3 months (correction in the cabin costs 650-1500 rubles). I immediately knew what exactly I would buy, because. I'm friends with a nail technician. For the first six months of my acquaintance with gel polish manicure, I did it in the salon just by this girl and I know what materials hold well on my nails. I approached the purchase reasonably, read a lot of reviews and now I can say that I was not mistaken in choosing my materials, they are definitely worth the money, they last a very long time at home, although I chose the smallest possible volumes! At the initial stage, you can do without a degreaser, clinser and remover, as I wrote above, they can be replaced with ZhDSL and purchased later. A primer may not be needed at all in your particular case, you will understand this depending on the time the gel polish is worn and the presence of chips, detachments. I did not save on the lamp - Small child leaves almost no free time, so drying each layer in 30 seconds in a LED lamp appeals to me more than 2 minutes in a UV lamp.
A little about the technology of applying gel polish:
- remove the old coating;
- perform a manicure;
- remove gloss from nails with a buff;
- degrease nails;
- apply a primer, if necessary;
- cover the nails with a base, seal the end, dry;
- remove the sticky layer ZhDSL;
- apply the first layer of colored gel polish, seal the end, dry;
- apply a second layer of colored gel polish, seal the end, dry. If necessary, apply one or two more layers in the same way;
- apply a top coat, seal the end, dry;
- remove the sticky layer with a clinser or ZhDSL.
Dry each layer for 2 minutes in a UV lamp or 30 seconds in a LED lamp. It is imperative to seal the ends and every time, this will ensure the durability of the manicure.
I specifically write briefly about the application technology, because. I think it's better to see once than to re-read 100 instructions! In the Internet a large number of video tutorials, I highly recommend watching a couple!
Removal of gel polish:
- prepare rectangular pieces of foil and cut a cotton pad the size of a fingernail, 10 pieces each;
- soak a piece of cotton pad in the remover, attach to the nail and wrap with prepared foil. Do the same with all remaining nails and leave for 10-15 minutes to soak the gel polish;
- remove the foil and cotton wool, remove the soaked gel polish with an orange stick or other tool. If the gel polish is not soaked the first time, remove as much as possible and return the cotton pad with foil that you just removed to the nail or do the wrapping procedure from the very beginning with a new cotton swab and foil.
- after removing the varnish, treat the cuticle with oil or cream (optional).
I try to remove the old coating and perform a trim manicure in advance, for example, the night before. As practice has shown, this is better than doing a manicure immediately before painting the nails. There are several reasons: firstly, the nails immediately after the manicure are steamed and wet, this can cause detachments in the future. Secondly, if you do a manicure in the evening, the nails have time to rest from the coating at night, the skin of the hands and around the nail calms down, moisturizes under the action of the cream. Thirdly, sometimes you bite too much with tweezers, the wound bleeds and prevents you from painting your nails ... And overnight, all problems practically disappear. It is very convenient for me to do a manicure in the evening, and paint my nails the next day. It also takes less time than doing everything at once!
Summarizing I want to say that in 2 months I got involved, I paint my nails evenly, I started to draw a little for a change in design. Hands look well-groomed, my home manicure is in no way inferior to the salon! What can I say, take a look for yourself! Saved a lot of money - no need to visit a manicurist. If a nuisance occurs and something peels off or breaks off, you can quickly fix everything at home, and not go for a week or two with a shabby manicure until the next correction in the salon! My nails are thin and flaky, but they grow like crazy, after a week you can already see a regrown piece of the nail. In the salon, I spent a lot of money for 3 corrections a month, or went for 14-20 days with regrown nails. Having everything for a gel polish manicure at home, it is not difficult for me to do a correction every 9-10 days! Hands always with a neat and fresh manicure.
Technology in the cosmetics industry is evolving day by day. They never cease to delight women who cannot imagine themselves without a manicure with innovations. What about manicure? Even the usual coating with a simple varnish faded into the background. After all, the focus is on gel polish, which has already won the hearts of many of the fair sex. This is not surprising, because gel polish is a good alternative to extended nails. The secret of varnish lies in its properties.
Gel polish, oddly enough, is a hybrid of varnish and gel. Moreover, its functions are associated with the best properties of varnish and gel, it can stay on the nails for about 20 days. This is an excellent indicator and a panacea for those girls who are tired of changing their varnish after 2-3 days.
If you are “lucky” to buy a cheap varnish, then it will generally last until the first immersion of the nails in water. But gel polish will provide high-quality durability up to 3 weeks. Just this property is associated with the gel.
Gel polish is applied just like regular polish (with a few exceptions). If you are a fan of unusual solutions, then the masters in the salons can offer you to mix several colors of gel polish, creating an unusual shade. This is being practiced now.
The popularity of this product, in addition to the above properties, is associated with the harmlessness of gel polish. But only if you give the nail plate to rest periodically.
For example, if gel polish took six months, then you should refuse such a procedure for a month. After the expiration of the period, you can restore the coating of the nails.
Salon manicure procedure with gel polish application is not cheap. But this does not prevent girls from knocking on the thresholds of salons. After all, it is better to pay for quality than to enjoy everyday tinting of nails.
Applying gel polish on nails is so popular that many girls have already abandoned other methods of coating.
A gel polish kit can be purchased at specialized cosmetic stores. Therefore, the girls, without thinking twice, decided to apply gel polish themselves, saving both time and money.
Of course, at first you will have to spend money on acquiring all the components, but subsequent procedures will pay off, because in the cabin the price is much higher. To do this, just learn the phased application of gel polish.
First, let's define the components that will be required:
- gel polishes (base, colored polish, top);
- degreaser (you can use acetone, but it can greatly dry out the nail platinum);
- alcohol;
- ultraviolet lamp (at least 36 W);
- brushes (optional, if you want to create an unusual manicure).
First step. Prepare the nail plate
The best way to prepare your nails is to get a manicure.
If this is not possible, then it is worth moving the cuticle with an orange stick. Cut the cuticle or not - it's up to you. Next, it is worth adjusting the length and shape of the nail.
It is important to check each nail for cracks. If there is a crack at the edge of the nail, then the gel polish may break off.
If the nail exfoliates, then the nail plate should be filed with a non-rigid file.
With a buff, you need to remove the upper keratin layer of the nail plate, eliminating the gloss.
This will make the polish last longer. After that, in no case should you wash the dishes, cook a sandwich and collect your husband for work. Everything must be sterile.
Third step. Degreasing
To do this, it is enough to wipe the nails with a disinfectant or nail polish remover containing acetone. You need to wipe thoroughly the butt and sides of the nail.
Fourth step. The basis
The base is needed for better adhesion of the varnish and the nail plate. It also contains vitamins and substances that precede the penetration of color varnish pigments.
You need to apply the base in one thin layer, moving away from the cuticle 2 mm. If you apply the foundation with a greasy layer, then the gel polish will break off faster. It is impossible to apply the base on the end and edges of the nail. Polymerization in a 36 W UV lamp takes 2 minutes.
Fifth step. Applying colored varnish
Before applying the colored varnish must be mixed, but without shaking! When shaking, the gel polish is enriched with bubbles, so we simply roll it in our hands, literally warming the bottle with our heat.
The first color coat of varnish should be applied in a thin layer. It is very important. Moreover, you need to retreat from the cuticle by 1 mm. The polymerization time of the first layer is 2 minutes (it is better to dry than not dry).
If your gel polish spreads, then you can place each painted nail in a lamp for 5-10 seconds.
If you are already satisfied with the result, then you do not need to finish the second layer. If you need a rich color, then you need to apply a second layer of varnish according to the same principle. - read here.
Sixth step. Top coat
The top coat should be thicker than the varnish.
Moreover, it is necessary to print the free edge of the nail plate.
After that, be sure to dry your nails well.
Seventh step. Removing the sticky layer
After drying, you need to remove the sticky layer with alcohol or a special tool.
Gel polish coating decorates nails without harm. Special tools will provide nutrition to the nail plate.
The main thing is to follow the rules when applying gel polish and then you can easily save yourself from exhausting repainting of nails in a day or two.
However, to remove gel polish, you need to purchase special products, otherwise you risk damaging the nail plate.
Video lesson - how to apply gel polish master class
With the advent of gel polish without advertising and persuasion, the product immediately became in demand and popular. However, before deciding to test a new type of manicure, it is better to familiarize yourself with all the advantages, disadvantages and nuances of using a varnish coating.
What is necessary
Necessary materials and tools for application at home:
For preparatory work, saws are mainly used:
- formative;
- polishing;
- grinding.
Fat-free places should not be touched with hands. If residual moisture is visible, it can be removed with a dehydrator.
Step by step application technology
After preparatory work, gel polish is applied. The center and the end side of the nail are filled with a decorative cosmetic product.
Movements should be careful and purposeful (up/down). No need to spend several times in the same place.
The base coat is sold as a set with a coloring agent or separately.
Used to create a conditionally ideal surface for adhesion to other components.
- The base is applied in a thin layer in one stroke, after which the hand is dried under the lamp for 1.5-5 minutes. The time is determined by the power of the lamp. Drying is recommended to be done alternately with one hand.
- Colored gel polish must cover the nail plates in two layers. If you plan to use more light shade, one gel layer is enough. For ease of application and obtaining a uniform color, it is recommended to stain each individual nail, followed by a 3-minute drying.
- The final coating is applied after the gel has completely dried in a thin layer using a special brush. The protective layer will prevent the manicure from premature damage and will become a good barrier against water, as well as light mechanical stress. It is convenient to repeat the technique of alternate processing of nails, followed by drying under a lamp. After finishing work, you need to dry all the fingers together for a few minutes again.
- A cotton pad dipped in an alcohol-containing composition will help remove the top sticky layer of varnish.
- It is recommended to complete the manicure by treating the cuticles with a special oil with a softening effect and nourishing the skin of the hands with a good cream.
The entire procedure for applying gel polish lasts approximately 40 minutes. At the end of it, the manicure should be protected from moisture and mechanical influences for the first days, until the hardening process is finally completed. This does not mean that you need to walk with your hands up. You can do your usual work right away. The gel hardened quite well under the lamp and when searching for keys in a purse or washing a cup under a tap, it will not be damaged. But prolonged contact with water or cleaning the house on the first day is undesirable.
Is it possible to do without a lamp
There is an opinion that it is impossible to fix the gel without a UV lamp. This is partly true, because one of the existing types of coatings really forms a solid structure only with the help of ultraviolet light. Craftswomen who have repeatedly attempted to apply the gel at home offer the option of drying with a heating blue healing lamp. However, its power is too low to affect the gel composition. If anyone managed to fix the varnish in this way, then for sure with a longer drying and not a strong enough result.
Gel polishes are divided into two types, which differ in composition and drying method. The photosensitive type implies the mandatory use of a special lamp. A non-photosensitive group is similar in properties to ordinary varnish, so some varieties can be cured with a stream cold water from the tap or a cooling 10 minute bath. But there are also products that do not harden without a catalyst (cyanoacrylate monomer). The fixing agent has a liquid or creamy structure. It is due to the chemical composition that the gel sets.
The marking on the packaging of the varnish "No-light gel" informs that special means for working with it are not provided. If there is no such sign, most likely, drying is allowed only with the use of a UV lamp.
How long will it last
Subject to all precautions, the varnish can remain presentable for more than two weeks, but after this period, the product begins to attach more strongly to the nail plates. Therefore, the gel must be washed off without fail 12-16 days after application. If you leave it for some more time, then it will be difficult to remove it and you can’t do without the use of aggressive means. This is fraught with damage to the structure of the nails.
The first two days, the process of adhesion of the decorative product to the nail plates continues. It is recommended to avoid prolonged contact with water to complete the chemical reaction.
After several applications of gel polish, it is worth taking a break for recovery and healing. During this period, you need to use a light base with a regular varnish.
How to withdraw
The lacquer coating cannot be simply taken and torn off, this will lead to the destruction of the structure of the nails. Further separation, excessive softness, thinning will create many problems. Ordinary nail polish remover will not cope with this composition. If you can’t get to the master in a timely manner, you can remove the coating at home.
To do this, you need to prepare the necessary materials:
Take pieces of cotton wool, soak them in acetone liquid, put them on the nail plates and wrap them in foil. After 10-15 minutes, you can try to remove the coating with an orange stick. If the procedure does not work, you should repeat the whole process again. When using a special liquid designed for, the duration of the procedure will be reduced to 5-7 minutes. Nails freed from the product need to be polished. A nail file designed for polishing will help to complete it. After that, you can do a manicure.
The salon process differs in a more gentle way, since a special liquid from the same manufacturer as the varnish is used.
Advantages and disadvantages
Benefits of gel polish:
- forms a beautiful shiny coating;
- keeps well on the nail plate, making it stronger;
- easy to apply;
- does not have a pungent odor;
- a wide palette of colors that allows you to choose any shade;
- brightness is maintained for 2 weeks;
- prevents delamination and the formation of chips;
- does not cause allergic reactions;
- The coating is firmly held for at least 2 weeks.
Flaws:
- feature of the coating removal procedure;
- participation in the process of creating a UV lamp manicure involves visiting a salon or a master at home;
- the coating undergoes deformation under the long-term action of water or during steaming, especially on the first day after application;
- thinning of the nail plates due to repeated use of gel polish.
To give the nails aesthetic beauty, it is not at all necessary to visit the master. Since it has become much easier to make gel polish today, you will master the technique even at home. We will gradually describe the main points and highlight what materials and tools you will need. Let's start!
How to make gel polish - we select tools and materials
Before you make a high-quality manicure with gel polish, you need to make sure that all the appliances are at home. What is needed for this?
Ultraviolet lamp
Of course, you can dry the coating without a lamp, but you will spend time and effort. In order to accelerate the polymerization of the composition, purchase a UF or LED lamp. Choose a unit with a power of at least 36 watts. The cost varies from 1.500 to 3.000 rubles. It all depends on the manufacturer. For use at home, the simplest lamp is suitable.
Nippers/scissors for manicure
Just before applying the coating, it is necessary to cut the cuticle so that the manicure is neat. Purchase stainless steel tongs or scissors from a professional store. The choice depends on what tool you are used to working with. The cost of scissors is 150 rubles, tweezers - 400 rubles.
Files, pushers, buffs
Since it is possible to make high-quality gel polish only if preliminary preparation of nails is carried out, at home it is necessary to take care of the availability of appropriate tools. Before gradually applying the coating, you will need to push the cuticle with a pusher (orange stick), shape the nails (with ordinary files), polish the surface (with a buff).
Degreaser
A degreaser, otherwise called a dehydrator, is required for pre-treatment of the nail plates. Thanks to this simple step, the gel polish will not peel off after 2-3 days. Also, a degreaser is needed to eliminate the sticky layer when the manicure is already 95% done. Do not rely on the advice of "experienced" who say that you can remove the sticky layer with alcohol or acetone.
primer
Since it can be quite difficult to do a manicure with gel polish at home, do not complicate your life. Follow the recommendations, buy a primer and everything else you need for this. The primer costs about 200 rubles for a 20 ml bottle. It is necessary for better adhesion of a natural plate with artificial turf.
Base, top
It would not be superfluous to mention that such concepts as "gel polish" and "shellac" represent the same composition. Shellac is just a well-known company that produces coatings of this kind. Before you make gel polish, make sure you have a base (base coat) and top (finish coat) at home. The step-by-step procedure is carried out simply in the presence of tubes with these two compounds.
Color gel polish
Here the main thing is color, quality is given minor role. Choose a shade according to your personal preferences. It is not necessary to consider eminent companies (such as Shellac), analogues will do. Better take care that the base with the top were of good quality. Let's sum it up - you can save a little on color.
Auxiliaries
When the manicure is completed, you will need to soften the cuticles with directional oil. You can use any vegetable, but it is better to buy a product for treating the skin around the nails. Auxiliaries also include decorative elements (sequins, rhinestones, sequins, stickers, etc.). If the design is complicated, get decorations for nails.
Manicure with gel polish in stages: 6 steps
We will now look at how to do beautiful manicure with gel polish. At home, you will need all the materials and tools. We have already figured out what is needed for this.
STEP #1
Steam your hands in a salt bath, push back the cuticles with a pusher. Cut off excess skin around the nail with tweezers or scissors. Arm yourself with a nail file, give the plates desired shape free edge (square, oval, circle).
STEP #2
Before you make gel polish, you need to take a buff and use it to remove the gloss from the nail plate. At home, this procedure must be carried out. When the nails become matte, we first degrease them in stages, then apply a primer over the entire surface of the plates and the free edge. The primer will seal the ends.
Important! After degreasing, the primer is distributed, then the base coat. Between applying the primer and the base, you can not take a break longer than 15 minutes. Otherwise, you need to make 1 more layer of primer.
STEP #3
Let's make a base. Gently roll the vial between your palms, but do not shake to avoid bubbles. Spread the product in a thin layer, avoiding the free edges of the nails. Do not let it run out onto the cuticles and periungual folds, otherwise remove the excess with an orange stick.
Important! In the process of distributing the base, follow the scheme: apply it on 4 fingers, dry it in a lamp for a minute. Then treat the thumb, dry it separately. Further, all these manipulations are carried out with the second hand. You can not apply varnish on all fingers (including thumbs) at the same time, otherwise the coating will drain to one side.
STEP #4
Let's start coloring. The selected color is first applied in a thin layer, dried in a lamp for 45 seconds. Then the second layer is made, the drying time is 1 minute. Similar to the base, first paint 4 nails, then platinum on thumb. If the color is uneven, make a third layer.
STEP #5
If decorations are used (rhinestones, stickers, etc.), it's time to attach them, since it will not work to make gel polish with rhinestones or sliders after applying the finish. To attach elements at home, take a toothpick, gradually dip it into a transparent varnish and grab the decor element with the tip. Attach one rhinestone after another.
STEP #6
Next, the finish (top) is applied in a fairly dense layer. Again, do not forget to seal the free edge by running a brush over it. Now remove the sticky layer with a dehydrator (degreaser). Soak a lint-free cloth in it, wipe nail by nail. Finally, moisturize your cuticles with oil. Ready!
Possible problems when applying gel polish
We found out what is needed for applying gel polish, considered step by step technique. But many masters are faced with the fragility of the result. Gel polish bubbles or falls off in a week, what should I do?
Problem number 1. Gel polish falls off in 2-3 days
Many masters are faced with the fact that the coating disappears as a whole plate literally 2 days after application. The problem is this:
- you did not remove the cuticle, as a result of which it grew back and prevented the varnish from holding firmly;
- you have not removed the polishing of the nail with a buff, thereby reducing the duration of the manicure;
- you carried out a phased application of gel polish on moistened nails;
- you used a low-quality primer or base;
- you did not seal the free edge of the nail plates.
Before applying gel polish to extend its wear, re-learn all the steps. At home, everything can be done in stages, no need to skip individual points.
Problem number 2. Brittleness of nails
If, after application, the nails become brittle, there are only 2 reasons for this:
- you did not buff the plates without preventing delamination at an early stage;
- you buffed the surface of the nails too much, so that they became thin.
The solution will be the following: in the process of removing the gloss, do not rub the nail with a buff too hard. It is enough to run the tool over it 2-3 times for a slight haze to appear.
Problem number 3. Voids under gel polish, cracks
If you notice that the coating is deformed, empty spaces appear between it and the nail, or the varnish is covered with cracks, the reasons may be this:
- insufficient drying time in the lamp;
- use of low quality top coat;
- the varnish was applied in thick layers.
Solution: increase the drying time, apply layers very thinly (it is better to do more per layer), use a high quality top, primer, base.
Today we looked at how to make high-quality gel polish on your own at home. All equipment is painted in stages, so you should not have any difficulties. Don't skip steps, get ready necessary tools and materials, learn and gain experience! Good luck!
